Scott Pilgrim vol. 1: Precious Little Life

Back in 2004, Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O'Malley published the first of his independent digest-sized comics through Oni Press. Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life introduced readers to a twenty-three year old guy from Toronto who lived with his gay roommate and was the bass player in a band called Sex Bob-omb. Scott is dating a seventeen year old high school girl named Knives Chau when a mysterious American woman named Ramona Flowers literally rolls into his life.

Many folks are most likely familiar with this story from the 2010 film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World starring Michael Cera which drew from all six volumes of this manga-styled, black and white comic.

For fans, there is good news. Starting in August of 2012, Oni Press will begin to release the series in a hardcover format. What makes this extra special is the series will be done in full color.

I had a chance to review this new volume prior to publication. I must say that the coloring done by Nathan Fairbairn really meshes will with O'Malley's art style. It was like seeing something familar in a new light.

The added bonus for me too was the Afterward section. Here O'Malley includes background on the origins of the series. We are treated to early sketches and details about the characters. He also includes photographs he took at the time which were used as references for locations in the book.

If you are a fan of the series, you definitely will want to look for the new release of Scott Pilgrim vol. 1: Precious Little Life.
