The Cars - Panorama

This month marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of Panorama, the third studio album from the Cars. This Platinum seller from 1980 went to number 19 in Australia, number 14 in New Zealand, and number 5 on the US Billboard Album chart. It spent a total of twenty-eight weeks on the Billboard chart.

Today (June 13th) marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of Candy-O, the second studio album from the Cars. The 1979 release spent sixty-two weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 3. It also hit number 30 in the UK, number 7 in Australia, number 6 in New Zealand, and number 4 in Canada.

The Cars - Heartbeat City (30th anniversary)

Today (March 13th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Heartbeat City, the fifth studio album from the Cars. It spent sixty-nine weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 3.

The Cars - The Cars (35th anniversary)

On this day (June 6th) back in 1978, the Cars released their self-titled debut album. Today we mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of this smash.

The Cars - Shake It Up

Benjamin Orr became friends and musical partners with Ric Ocasek in 1970 in Columbus, Ohio. After being part of a folk band called Milkwood, the two ended up in Boston. It was there they met guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson. Thus the Cars were formed.

On November 6th, 1981, the Cars released their fourth studio album. Shake It Up went to number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 200 and achieved multi-Platinum sales in the US. The record also reached number 40 in the Netherlands, number 20 in Australia and number 12 in New Zealand.

This review of the Cars fifth studio release, from March 13th of 1984, is by request from some of my followers on Twitter.

Heartbeat City benefited from radio airplay of a number of hits as well as music videos in heavy rotation on MTV. As a result, the album went to number 3 on the US Billboard 200 charts and was certified multi-platinum; in the UK it went to number 25 on the charts.

I thought I would treat everyone to a second helping of "Seventies Saturday" this week.

It's not surprising that a lot of debut albums ended up on the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" and on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All-Time. There are quite a number of outstanding first records by bands in the history of rock and roll. The Cars 1978 debut (released on June 6th) falls into that category (it appears at #279 on the Rolling Stone list).
