John Cougar Mellencamp - Uh-Huh!

Today (October 7th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Uh-Huh, the seventh studio album by John Cougar Mellencamp (and the first on which he used his real last name). Per the record sleeve, it was written, arranged and recorded over a sixteen day period. It charted at number 92 in the UK, number 57 in Australia, number 24 in Sweden, and number 9 in Canada and on the US Billboard Album chart. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 32 on its list of the 100 Greatest Albums of the 80's.

Today, June 10th, also marks the 30th anniversary of the release of John Cougar's sixth studio album American Fool.

To celebrate, I am going to cue up this album and jump back to the summer of 1982 when I was driving my Chevette all around the small western NY town I grew up in.

Welcome to another edition of Soundtrack Sunday.

In 1988, the silver-screen was buzzing with a new Tom Cruise film that centered on bartending. Bryan Brown, Elisabeth Shue and Gina Gershon also starred in it. The film itself grossed $78 million dollars in the US box office alone. The soundtrack album was equally a success, selling over 12 million copies world-wide and reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 album charts.

John Cougar - American Fool

On June 10th of 1982, John Mellencamp released his sixth and last album under his stage name of John Cougar.

It also turned out to be his big commercial breakthrough, scoring a number 1 spot on the US Billboard 200 album charts and the Canadian album charts. It sold over 10 million copies in North America alone.
