Book Review: Manga Drawing School

Whatever level you are and whatever your age, this book is packed with tips, tricks, and all the practical know-how you need to develop your manga drawing skills in line with new trends in manga art. Experienced teacher Mei Yu shows you how to draw a range of skin tones, body shapes, and much more.

Starting with the basics of drawing human characters, you will go on to learn about proportion, expressions, emotions, and hairstyles; design your own costumes; and learn how to convey movement in your art. We will also cover creating cute, magical, or awesome creatures.

Manga Drawing School by Mei Yu will be published September 3, 2024. DK Publishing provided an early galley for review.

Since I've been reading and enjoying a lot of manga over the recent years, this how-to guide popped up at just the right time. My artistic skills are average, at best, so I can always use some good pointers.

Mei's approach and style are very easy to follow and informative; she breaks each lesson down into several steps so the reader can follow along with their own paper and pencils. An artist just starting out will find them super helpful.

I also liked how she explains the four major types of manga: Shonen, Shojo, Josei, and Seinen, and gives examples of each in the lessons throughout. This is very critical when creating artwork in this style.

I also appreciated the basics of color theory and the color wheel. This really enforced why certain combinations work better than others to achieve various overall tones, styles and effects.
