Will Nancy’s fearless detective work expose the mansion’s chilling secrets and unmask the villain behind them? A spooky page-turner for mystery lovers of any age!

Nancy Drew Mysteries book 2: The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene will be republished June 16, 2026. Dover Publications provided a galley for review.

This continues on with Dover Publications facsimille release of the classic 1930's juvenile mystery series. As with the previous one, the only modifications are changing so some wording that had outdated and inappropriate racial references.

Things have stepped up a bit since the debut novel. There is further worldbuilding with events and characters from the first tale reappearing. Nancy is a bit older (16 last time, close to 17 here). The stakes are also higher (her father put in danger and she carrying his revolver). The writer(s) are finding their groove and realizing this could evolve into something larger (heck, the title of the next mystery is revealed in the last pages).

The amount of exclamation points have toned down. There is, however, a bit more omnicient POV filtering in (while most of the story is through Nancy's eyes, we get a few chapters devoted to Carson and even some points where the narration hints at upcoming moments that none of the characters would have knowledge of). One nice touch is that Nancy is collecting souvenirs from each case.
