Book Review: No Job for a Man

A darkly witty, deeply affecting, and finely crafted memoir by the Big Bang Theory and Speechless star and comedian, John Ross Bowie.

No Job for a Man follows John’s journey as he tries to make it in the arts, meeting success and failure, wins and losses, despair and hope along the way. Though his father chronically refuses to acknowledge pride in his adult son’s accomplishments, John comes to his own idiosyncratic version of being a man.

Bowie's biography was published November 2022 by Pegasus Books.

I've enjoyed Bowie on his sitcoms as well as on the podcast The Record Junkies with Brendan Smith. So, time for me to check out his memoir from a few years back.

Bowie and I are of similar ages (I've got six years on him), and both are native New Yorkers (he the city, me the state). Therefore, I really felt a vibe with his story. I enjoyed how music was a touchstone throughout his life (and still to this day). I was not aware that his first career was teaching.

In the end, I appreciated that his story is about discovery and finding those places of fit through out life. For many people, this is very much the norm. It was nice to know that we're not alone in the journey. Bowie would definitely make for a fantastic and fun traveling companion on that journey.
