Book Review: Old Bastards

Hi, I’m Tracy. I work in a nursing home, and to say I hate it would be a gross fucking understatement. It’s got a few perks though — like the sleeping pills (so long as no one sees you take them), and Juan, the hot guy who sells me weed and totally wants in my pants.

But lately, things have been fucking weird. Some old bitch died — it wasn’t my fault, I swear! — and now she’s haunting me. Everywhere I go, she's there, creeping me out with her big creepy face. Does she want something, or am I just tripping? Either way, she better fuck off before I really lose my shit.

Old Bastards: A Very Naughty Comedy was written by Stevie Duffy, independently published June 24, 2026.

Stevie is an author I got to know over on his SubStack account. I really enjoy his sense of humor and his Scottish accent.

As the title indicates, this is a very naughty comedy indeed. If language and sexual references give you pause, this might not be the book for you.

For me, however, I was laughing out loud right from chapter 1. His novel is like watching a raunch, R-rated comedy movie with great pacing, memorable and outlandish characters, and plenty of laughs. Stevie has a knack for this, and it comes across brilliantly on the page. I also simply adore the use of pop culture references and similarly related things. That's exactly on my wavelength. From his book, I suspect he and I would be fast mates if we ever met in a pub in real life.

As for Tracy herself, I found her to be a realistic protagonist. She has her bad moments; she has her good moments. Just like we all do. That's what makes her relatable to this reader.

I understand from him that a sequel Really Old Bastards is already in the works. I cannot wait.
