Book Review: Plotting Your Fantasy Novel

Do you have great worldbuilding and character ideas, but don’t know what should actually happen in your story? Have you started writing a book, only to get stuck halfway through? Do you have cool scene concepts, but don’t know how to link them together, or what to do between your big plot moments? If you said yes to any of those questions, then this book is for you.

Following a 9-Point Plot Structure, writers are show how to build their characters and plots in unison, allowing the stories to unfold in an organic, cohesive fasion. This process draws from the author's experience publishing over four fantasy novels, teaching 5000+ writers through live classes and self-paced courses, and making hundreds of in-depth YouTube videos about fantasy writing.

Plotting Your Fantasy Novel: A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing a Brilliant Story by Jed Herne was published by Undergrove Press on March 30, 2026.

I picked up this guide to continue on improving my own work as I have dabbled with fantasy writing throughout my life. I've been following Jed's YouTube channel for a couple years now and have found his advice and tips useful when working on my own writing. Just like his videos, this book delivers information in a friendly and fun manner. There are loads of examples here that are easy to grasp and follow.

A third of the book is devoted to a thorough breakdown of the 9-Point Plot Structure approach. This is one of the predominant story layout approaches, an easy of for newer writers to learn and master.

Jed also provides a (free) workbook download that he uses when developing his novels. Each chapter discusses elements of that workbook, to provide the reader a methodology to follow that has worked successful for him. This is a great bonus that helps the reader put the principles directly into action with their writing.

While designed specifically with fantasy novels in mind, the principles and topics discussed can apply to writing in other genres as well.
