Book Review: The End League - Complete Collection

In a devastated world ruled by supervillains, the last surviving heroes embark on a desperate quest to find the mythic Hammer of Thor, believing it holds the key to restoring hope to humanity. The End League is a gripping saga of high-stakes survival, packed with character-driven storytelling and breathtaking visuals.

Superstar writer Rick Remender (The Sacrificers, Tokyo Ghost) unites with comics legends Mat Broome (X-Men, Batman), Eric Canete (Iron Man, Martian Manhunter), and Andy MacDonald (Justice League, Multiple Man) for a desperate, pedal-to-the-metal fight through the ashes of civilization for a future that’s already lost.

The End League: Complete Collection will be published April 7, 2026. Image Comics provided an early galley for review.

The nine issues in this collection were originally published by Dark Horse Comics in 2008 and 2009. It is a dark, dystopian spin on super-hero comics with some commentary on the genre as part of the narrative. The story has some wonderful visuals (especially in the first arc of the two), yet the cast is rather large and not very fully fleshed out. I found I understood it more after doing an Internet search and reading a wiki entry relating to the book.

Several of the characters are arch types, so if you feel like you've seen some of these folks before then you are not alone. There are stand-ins for Superman, Thor, Captain America, the Joker and more here. While it does provide a short-cut in using these types of representatives, it did not give this reader any real connection or feelings for these folks. I was reading more for the spectacle and not feeling any care for the characters themselves. It probably does not help that this came out around the time I was pulling back on my monthly reading of comics (after decades of dedication).

Still, nice to have it all in a single volume (previously the two arcs were published in two separate trades).
