Book Review: The Linchpin Writer

In every novel there are pivotal places that can make or break a book. Write them well, and you'll have your readers begging for a sequel. Write them poorly, and your book will get scathing reviews and sell only a handful of copies. These pivotal places are "linchpin moments," and in this book you'll learn how to nail these moments.

Based on real advice from editing hundreds of novels, John Matthew Fox guides writers through the process of creating a novel that soars in the reader's imagination. After reading this book, you'll be a better storyteller, a better self-editor, and a better writer.

The Linchpin Writer: Crafting Your Novel's Key Moments was published October 26, 2022, by Bookfox Press.

I have been following Fox's YouTube channel for a good while now, and I really enjoy his approach to writing advice. So, I wanted to throw some support his way by picking up his book on the subject.

Like in his videos, Fox fills each chapter discussion with plenty of examples from published works. He admits to being well-read and encourages we writers to be so too. Every book and story can help further to perfect one's own craft (with both things that work and things that do not).

I like too that each chapter ends with Writing Challenges. These exercises reiterate what was discussed and allow the readers to put into practice techniques to improve our writing. With each chapter acting like a lesson in a course, the challenges are the take-away assignments.

Fox also filters in the details of important aspects of his writing life in the form of lessons learned. It is encouraging to hear from a published professional both the successful steps and the occasional missteps; it is a reminder that on our journey of writing that we're not the only one going through these ups and downs.

I would very much recommend to all those writers looking to sharpen their skill sets.
