Book Review: Her Royal Spyness

Georgie, aka Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, cousin of King George V of England, is penniless and trying to survive on her own as an ordinary person in London in 1932. So far she has managed to light a fire and boil an egg... She's gate-crashed a wedding... She's making money by secretly cleaning houses... And she's been asked to spy for Her Majesty the Queen.

Everything seems to be going swimmingly until she finds a body in her bathtub... and someone is definitely trying to kill her.

Her Royal Spyness is the first book in a series by Rhys Bowen. It was published January 2007 by Berkley Publishing Group.

I chose this title for our mystery book club because it sounded like a lighter fare than some we've done of late. Well, this one is very light indeed. So light, in fact, that it took quite a bit to get to any sort of mystery plot line.

Most of the first few chapters are used to set up the background of Georgie and the circumstances of life that she finds herself in. Despite the long set-up, I found it all entertaining. I found myself chuckling at some of the situations and the dialogue exchanges, and the cast was a lot of fun. It is very much in line with a period piece I might see on the BBC or PBS.

Overall, it was a good story which I think my group will enjoy talking about in November.
