Deep in the Dark Dimension, the tyrant Umar the Unrelenting craves the Power Cosmic to expand her realm into new dimensions. When she kidnaps the cosmic being Ardina to make a grim battery of her powers, she draws the attention of Clea, her estranged daughter and mighty user of the mystic arts. Clea knows her mother will stop at nothing to conquer the whole of the Splinter Realms, imperiling all of reality. To defeat her, Clea must ally herself with three powerful sorceresses, each with their own unique powers, traverse dimensions, and free Ardina and the entire Archipelago of Anguish and Redemption before Umar consumes it all.
The Sisters of Sorcery was written by Marsheila Rockwell and was published by Aconyte Books in September of 2022.
I have enjoyed the previous releases in this Marvel Untold line by Aconyte. As others have, this one delves into the mystical aspects of that universe, and I was eager to see what was being offered this time. The story appears to spin-off of events from The Order, a Marvel mini involving the Defenders back from 2002 (which I've not read). The author does a great job catching up folks on those events while moving the plot forward quickly.
Clea always fascinated me when she'd show up in Marvel titles back in the 70's and 80's. The book also includes other favorites of mine - Hellcat, Agatha Harkness and Talisman. I always liked how the Marvel writers would infuse stories with strong, unique female characters such as these ones. That really helped to make the line stand out to me.
The theme of parent-child relationships is also prevalent in this story. I like how Rockwell touched upon these and played them off against one another. It gives the story additional layers and helps to reinforce the dynamics of the main women in the plot.
All in all, this was a quick and fun read. It kept me fully engaged with a plot that kept progressing at a good pace - right to a solid finale. I hope the author has the opportunity to do more Marvel fiction for Aconyte.
