This month marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of the self-titled 1981 debut album from the Stray Cats. Released only in the UK, it peaked at number 6 on the charts. Some of the tracks would appear later in the band's 1982 release Built For Speed, a compilation of their first two records.

Friday, October 16, 1981, was a good night for fifteen year old me. That was the night I first saw and heard the Stray Cats on an episode of ABC's Fridays. They performed four songs in three sets, including a middle set featuring both "Stray Cat Strut" and "Rock This Town" which made me an instant fan of the band. While announcing that second set with the two songs mentioned above, cast member Brandis Kemp whispered the words from the cue card as she held it facing the camera, her finger pointing out the words as she read:
ReplyDeleteBE PATIENT:
THEIR ALBUMS HAVE NOT YET BEEN RELEASED IN AMERICA -
THE STRAY CATS!
Watch their performances from that night
While I love those two original UK albums, I always come back to Built For Speed, their American debut, like you said a compilation of their earlier work.
Thanks for this!
