Side one begins with “The Medicine Song”, from whose lyrics the album’s title comes. As the first single, it hit number 65 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 29 in the UK, number 8 on the US Billboard R&B chart, and number 1 on the US Billboard Dance chart. Stephanie believes she has the cure to a roaming eye in this mid-tempo dance track.
The second single was “Edge of the Razor” went to number 47 on the US Billboard R&B chart and number 14 on the US Billboard Dance chart. This dance groove lives in the fast lane of love and deception for a sex addict. I like the saxophone solo at the end, a key element of many 80’s grooves.
On “In My Life”, a woman pines for a man who she is attracted to but who belongs to another.
“Give It Half a Chance”, written by Kenny Loggins and Stephen Bishop, is a beautiful ballad that shows off the rich textures of Stephanie’s voice.
Side two opens with “Outrageous”, an up-tempo exclamation of adoration for an amazing dude.
“You Just Might Need a Friend” has a slinky, funky groove and a surprising piano riff. Stephanie’s vocals are teasing and tempting, as clearly this is a friend with benefits.
The ballad “Everlasting Love” features a light, jazzy rhythm musically and some sweet, smooth vocals. Stephanie really works it here, showing her range with effortless ease.
“Rough Trade” was selected as the B-side to the second single. It warns of getting involved with bad boys.
The album closes with the bouncy beats of “Undercover”.
This was Stephanie Mills’ final release on the Casablanca Records label. It was long out of print until 2013 when Soul Music Records reissued much of her catalog with bonus extended dance remixes. Once again, thanks to the YouTube community for sharing most of the tracks so I could do the review. I continue to be a fan of Stephanie’s music, and this is one I will definitely seek out to add to my collection.
