Champaign - Woman in Flames

Named after their hometown in Illinois, the American R&B Champaign released their third studio album Woman in Flames thirty years ago this month. The record spent three weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 184.

Tommy Shaw - Girls With Guns

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of Girls With Guns, the debut solo album from Styx guitarist/singer Tommy Shaw. It spent twenty-five weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 50.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome (30th anniversary)

Today (October 29th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Welcome to the Pleasuredome, the debut album from Frankie Goes to Hollywood. This 1984 release spent forty-one weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 33.

Philip Bailey - Chinese Wall

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of Chinese Wall, the second solo studio album from Philip Bailey. It spent thirty-five weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 22. It also hit number 10 on the US Billboard R&B chart. The record earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance Male.

Dazz Band - Jukebox

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of Jukebox, the sixth studio album from the Dazz Band. It spent twenty-nine weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 83. It also went to number 18 on the US Billboard R&B chart.

Welcome to another edition of Seventies Saturday.

This month marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of the self-titled debut of the Specials. This 1979 release went to number 34 in Sweden, number 21 in Canada, number 5 in New Zealand and number 4 in the UK. Here in the US, it spent twenty-one weeks on the Billboard Album chart with a top spot of 84.

Janet Jackson - Dream Street

Yesterday (October 23rd) marked the thirtieth anniversary of Dream Street, the second studio album from Janet Jackson. Despite Janet’s ongoing role as Cleo Hewitt on season 4 of the TV show Fame, the album only spent six weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 147. It did get to number 19 on the US Billboard R&B chart. The album had four producers – her brother Marlon Jackson, Jesse Johnson of the Time, and disco greats Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte (who guided many of Donna Summer’s biggest hits).

Wham! - Make It Big

Today (October 23rd) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Make It Big, the second studio album from Wham! The multi-Platinum seller hit number 5 in France and Germany, number 4 in Austria, and number 3 in Sweden. It held the number 1 spot on the charts in Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the UK. It also went to number 1 here in the US, with a total of eighty weeks on the Billboard Album chart.

Paul McCartney - Give My Regards to Broad Street

Today (October 22nd) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Give My Regards to Broad Street, the soundtrack album to the film of the same name starring Paul McCartney. While the film did not fare well, the album was big across the globe. It went to number 25 in Germany and New Zealand, number 24 in the Netherlands, number 23 in Canada, number 21 on the US Billboard Album chart (with eighteen weeks total on the chart), number 15 in Italy, number 10 in Australia, number 9 in Sweden, number 6 in Japan, number 4 in Norway and Spain, and number 1 in the UK.

Culture Club - Waking Up with the House on Fire

Tomorrow (October 22nd) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Waking Up with the House on Fire, the third studio album from Culture Club. The record did well, charting at number 22 in West Germany, number 21 in Switzerland, number 19 in Sweden, number 15 in New Zealand, number 9 in Norway, number 7 in the Netherlands and Italy, number 6 in Canada, number 4 in Japan, and number 2 in Australia, France and the UK. Here in the US, it spent twenty weeks on the Billboard Album Chart with a peak spot of 26.

Pat Benatar - In the Heat of the Night (35th anniversary)

Today (October 20th) marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of the release of In the Heat of the Night, the debut album from rocker Pat Benatar. It spent a total of one hundred and twenty two weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 12.

Art of Noise - Who Is Afraid of the Art of Noise?

This week (October 22nd) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Who’s Afraid of the Art of Noise?, the first full-length studio album from the English group the Art of Noise. It charted at number 35 in New Zealand, number 30 in the Netherlands and number 27 in the UK. Here in the US, it spent thirteen weeks on the Billboard Album chart with a top spot of number 85.

Big Country - Steeltown

Today (October 19th) is the thirtieth anniversary of Steeltown, the second studio album from Big Country. Around the globe, it went to number 53 in Canada and Germany, number 33 in the Netherlands, number 28 in Sweden, number 15 in New Zealand, number 12 in Norway, and number 1 in the UK. Here in the US, it spent seventeen weeks on the Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 70.

Earlier this week (October 15th) marked the thirtieth anniversary of Contact, the follow-up album to the 1983 self-titled debut EP (click here for that review) from Dreamboy. It would also end up being the final recording by the Michigan band at the time.

UB40 - Geffery Morgan

Today (October 16th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Geffery Morgan, the fifth studio album from UB40. The album charted at number 49 in Sweden, number 27 in New Zealand, number 9 in the Netherlands, and number 3 in the UK. Here in the US, it spent twenty-six weeks on the Billboard Album chart with a top spot of 60.

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Today (October 15th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Stop Making Sense, the live album from Talking Heads. It served as a soundtrack to the concert film of the same name that was released in theatres in April of 1984. It spent one-hundred and eighteen weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 41. It also went to number 33 in Canada, number 26 in Sweden, number 24 in the UK, number 13 in Switzerland, number 12 in Austria, and number 2 in the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Julian Lennon - Valotte

Tomorrow (October 15th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Valotte, the debut album of Julian Lennon. This 1984 release went to number 60 in Denmark, number 41 in Japan, number 20 in the UK, number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (where it spent forty-six weeks total on the chart), number 15 in New Zealand, number 12 in Canada, and number 8 in Australia.

Ramones - Too Tough To Die

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of Too Tough To Die, the eighth studio album from the Ramones. It was the first to feature Richie Ramone (Richard Reinhardt) on drums. It spent six weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 171. It also hit number 63 in the UK and number 49 in Sweden.

Hall & Oates - Big Bam Boom

Today (October 12th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Big Bam Boom, the twelfth studio album from Daryl Hall and John Oates. This multi-platinum seller went to number 28 in the UK and number 20 in Australia. It also spent fifty-one weeks on the US Billboard Album chart where it peaked at number 5.

Stephanie Mills - I've Got the Cure

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of I’ve Got the Cure, the eighth studio album from Stephanie Mills. This release spent fifteen weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 73. It also went to number 10 on the US Billboard R&B chart.

Rebbie Jackson - Centipede

Today (October 10th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Centipede, the debut album from Rebbie Jackson. She was the oldest of the Jackson family kids, but did not record her first record until she was in her mid-thirties. This album spent eighteen weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 63. It also reached number 13 on the US Billboard R&B chart.

Devo - Shout

Today (October 9th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Shout, the sixth studio album from Devo. In Canada, it peaked at number 92. Here in the US, it spent six weeks on the Billboard Album chart with a top spot of number 83.

The Fall - The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall

Following the release of 1983’s Perverted By Language (click here for that review), the Fall returned with their seventh studio album The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall. Today (October 8th) marks the thirtieth anniversary of the album’s release. It went to number 62 in the band’s native UK.

Bronski Beat - The Age of Consent (30th anniversary)

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of The Age of Consent, the debut album from the Bronski Beat. It spent twenty-five weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 36.

Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of I Can Dream About You, the fifth studio album from American singer-songwriter Dan Hartman. The record peaked at number 55 on the US Billboard Album chart, with a twenty-eight week total chart run. It was his highest ranking album to date here in the States.

Ashford and Simpson - Solid

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of Solid, the twelfth studio album from husband and wife singer/song-writers Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. This one hit number 42 in the UK, number 29 on the US Billboard Album chart (with a total thirty-six week run on the chart) and number 1 on the US Billboard R&B chart.

Apollonia 6 - Apollonia 6

Today (October 1st) marks the thirtieth anniversary of Apollonia 6, the self-titled only release from the three girl trio of Apollonia (Patricia) Kotero, Susan Moonsie, and Brenda Bennett. Moonsie and Bennett had previously been two-thirds of the group Vanity 6, while Apollonia was cast as the female lead for Purple Rain. As the last of the spin-off albums from that film, this one spent seventeen weeks on the US Billboard Album chart and peaked at number 62.
