Tavares - Madam Butterfly

Welcome to another edition of Seventies Saturday.

This month marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of Madam Butterfly, the seventh studio album the five Tavares brothers. The record spent eleven weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 92. I also hit number 90 in Canada and number 13 on the US Billboard R&B chart.

Following their 1982 release New Directions (click here for that review), Tavares returned a year later with their twelfth and final studio album. Today we will give a listen to 1983’s Words and Music, which charted at number 208 on the US Billboard Album chart and number 48 on the US Billboard R&B chart, in celebration of its thirtieth anniversary.

Back on August 24th, New Directions, the eleventh studio album from the R&B group Tavares, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. Since I missed reviewing it a few months ago, I thought I would talk about this 1982 release today from five talented siblings (Ralph, “Pooch” (Arthur), “Chubby” (Antone), “Butch” (Feliciano) and “Tiny” (Perry)).

It charted at number 137 on the US Billboard Hot 200 and number 30 on the Billboard R&B charts. It was also the first of two albums they recorded on the RCA label (the last and the group's final album would come in 1983).

Welcome to another edition of “Soundtrack Sunday”.

This time we’re jumping back to the late 1977 released album that sold over 15 million copies world-wide, that stayed atop the album charts for twenty-four straight weeks from January to July of 1978, and stayed overall on the Billboard album charts for a total of one hundred and twenty weeks (until March 1980). Coincidentally, it was the record that dethroned yesterday’s reviewed album Linda Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams from its number one album perch. This soundtrack even was ranked in Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 500 Albums of All-Time, coming it at position 131. Of course, I am talking about Saturday Night Fever.
