Streets of Fire (soundtrack) (30th anniversary)

Welcome to another edition of Soundtrack Sunday.

In June of 1984, a film hit the theatres that had dreams of being a big blockbuster but failed to gross enough to cover its original budget. The soundtrack of Streets of Fire, however, sported a big line up - from the Blasters to the Fixx, Jim Steinman to Dan Hartman, and so many. It spent twenty-one weeks on the US Billboard Album chart, peaking at number 32.

Eric Clapton - Money and Cigarettes

Today (February 1st) marks the thirtieth anniversary of the release of Money and Cigarettes, the eighth solo studio album from British guitar legend Eric Clapton. This 1983 album went to number 20 in Australia, number 16 in the Netherlands and on the US Billboard Hot 200, number 13 in the UK, number 11 in New Zealand, number 9 in Japan, number 5 in Sweden and number 3 in Norway.

Assisting Clapton on the record were Ry Cooder (guitar), Albert Lee (guitar, keyboards and vocals), Donald “Duck” Dunn (bass), and Roger Hawkins (drums). Backing vocals were also provided by Chuck Kirkpatrick and John Sambataro.

In 1988, the silver-screen was buzzing with a new Tom Cruise film that centered on bartending. Bryan Brown, Elisabeth Shue and Gina Gershon also starred in it. The film itself grossed $78 million dollars in the US box office alone. The soundtrack album was equally a success, selling over 12 million copies world-wide and reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 album charts.

Not even stars Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis, Deborah Van Valkenburgh and a very young Bill Paxton could save Streets of Fire for cinema disaster.

However, thanks to an interesting musical score and a pretty decent soundtrack album, the film did find itself a cult following among fans. Today we look at that soundtrack album.
