Book Review: The Legend of Uh

Sir Dashing Junior was only knighted because they couldn't knight his father twice. Now he's determined to prove he's worthy of his new title. With an aspiring ranger, an awkward friar, and a book-loving orc, DJ will venture across the territory of Uh to reach the Amulet of the Goddess, proving that he’s truly worthy of knighthood.

Along the way, he and his companions will encounter a cursed author, a violent noodle cult, democratic goblins, and a whole lot more. It’s a journey fraught with danger and discovery, and the territory is rich with monsters and magic, so is DJ’s quest for respect really worth the cost?

The Legend of Uh by Aaron N. Hall will be published on February 25th, 2025 by IronFire Media. My thanks to the author for sharing an early galley with me.

I was very excited when Aaron reached out to me to offer an early read of his upcoming novel. He had me at "fantasy comedy". Fantasy has always been a genre that appealed to me since my early teens, and the addition of humor into the mix is just icing on that cake.

The story has some cozy fantasy elements in it, along with a very "dungeons and dragons" kind of vibe (I could see these adventures happening during some table-top role-playing-game sessions - see the acknowledgement at the end of the book). At one point, about two-thirds of the way in, DJ makes an observation about the "kind of story" their journey is (which he is right). And Francis the orc responds in a very meta-joking way. For me, the humor was subtle which worked very well in the entire story. I even appreciated the nod to a particular video game which came out in November of 2011 (one I still play periodically to this day).

If you're looking for a fun fantasy read, this one satisfies nicely.
